The Advanced Search option prompts you to choose the category of databases you wish to search. Advanced Search also allows you to join multiple terms from various data fields with Boolean operators.

To use Advanced Search, click the Advanced Search option on the Navigation Frame. Then follow these steps:

  1. Select a category: The name of the default database category is displayed to the right of the blue button.
To select a different database category, click the blue button. A browser window opens and displays the list of STNEasy database categories.

The window closes, and the name of the category you chose is displayed next to the blue button.

Note: It is important to do step 1 first. The databases you select determine the data fields displayed in step 2.

  1. Enter your search terms:
    1. In the top left box, select the field, e.g., Word(s), Patent Assignee, Chemical Name
    2. In the box to the right, enter your search term. See the Searching Guidelines for details. Click the Browse Index button to the right of the row to see if your term is included in the index for the database(s) you have chosen to search. See Browse Index for details.
    3. (Optional) Add additional terms to your search in the second row of boxes:
    1. Select a Boolean Operator, i.e., AND, OR, NOT, NEAR
    2. Choose a field to be searched
    3. Enter your search term
    1. (Optional) Click the Add a Search Term button below the search terms to join additional terms to your search query
  1. Search: Click Search. The Searching in statement verifies the database category being searched. A list of answers is displayed on the Answer page.
